Globalisation makes art bland
London’s Barbican Theatre recently presented works by African choreographers Vincent Mantsoe, Seydou Boro and Ariry Mahefasoa Mohoatrarivo Andriamoratsiresy. Similarly, 651 ARTS in Brooklyn, New York, showcased the African artists Compagnie Konga Ba Téria, Sello Pesa and, again, Ariry Mahefasoa Mohoatrarivo Andriamoratsiresy. The most provocative aspect of these works was their use of alternative dance-making features not usually associated with African dance aesthetics.
Hinting at new stirrings in African dance practice, these expressions were an indication that African dance is currently embracing European modern and post-modern inclinations.
Press reactions to these works in New York and London were mixed. Some pejorative responses searched for similarities with European dance while simultaneously denigrating or missing African aesthetic roots entirely.
