Northern Ballet celebrates its 45th anniversary in March 2015 at an event entitled the Sapphire Gala in Leeds. At a similar gala, to recognise the company’s four decades of existence, the starry international guests were somewhat eclipsed by the dancers of the home company who conclusively proved that being based in a regional city did not inhibit performance of the highest quality. Northern Ballet has picked up many tributes in recent years and is currently nominated for a range of awards by the London Critics’ Circle.

It recently received the accolade of being voted Best European Ballet Company at the Malakhov Foundation’s Taglioni Awards in Berlin by Jurors representing seven countries, who commended the unique repertoire created by the Artistic Director, David Nixon.

Nixon’s company works harder than any other UK dance troupe and will give in excess of 850 performances in 40 cities over the next three years, reaching a live audience of 500,000 people. The Chief Executive, Mark Skipper, stated that by performing in nine new venues in a mid-scale tour the company would reach an additional audience of 54,000.
