Grupo Corpo: «Onqotô» in Rio de Janeiro

It was 1978 when the first show by the now internationally known Grupo Corpo presented the possibility of a personal and Brazilian form of contemporary dance. From the first musical partnership with Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant with the best of Brazilian music from the Minas Gerais – the same colonial mining region that is home to the group – Corpo grew up to be 30 years old and decided to look back at its origins, its vocabulary and high quality Brazilian music again to celebrate.

In quality as well as in numbers, generations of dancers helped Corpo to become an icon of Brazilian culture, with the most financial support for a dance company in Brazil. This financial stability – unique in Brazil, until Deborah Colker’s feat a decade ago – made it possible for the group to create huge shows that raised the standard of quality and extravagance and that continue to define the public image of the group in Brazil and abroad.
