San Francisco choreographers review their own pieces
Choreographers in Action (CIA) is an organization which has brought 132 San Francisco Bay Area choreographers together with the aim of coming out of isolation. Action was needed after the latest space crises in 2003. Organized by three choreographers, Joanna Haigood, Brenda Way and Margaret Jackson, Brenda Way volunteered her own building, used by her ODC dance company, for use by CIA as well.
CIA is concerned with the politics of funding. One of their tasks is to reach out to locally elected government officials.
In California, state funding for the arts has been slashed by more than 94 per cent in recent years. CIA wants to raise the question of the priority of government funding for the arts. Its success depends mostly on the involment of its membership. “Generosity is the price of membership. No staff, no fundrising, just the power of collective will,” said the CIA’s founders.
