I meet Margaretha Åsberg in her lofty studio situated in an old building on Skeppsholmen, a tiny island in the middle of Stockholm. The sun is shining through the high windows of the building that was formerly used for torpedo maintenance and is still called The Torpedo Workshop. Today the building houses Moderna Dansteatern, founded by Margaretha Åsberg.
Margaretha Åsberg discovered the dilapidated building in the early 1980s and it was love at first sight.

No easy love, it took some years of hard struggle to convince the bureaucrats to let her lease the building and then to get everything in working order before the theatre could be inaugurated in 1986 with the premiere of “Yucatan” by Åsberg. Soon Moderna Dansteatern established itself as one of Sweden‘s leading dance institutions. In 2004, Åsberg felt it was time to leave her post as artistic director and move on.
In a way, Åsberg has always been on the move, constantly passing from one point to any other, on an unpredictable course. In fact, her career took off with two tours with the Royal Swedish Ballet, to GDR and China. Åsberg remembers that she was totally unprepared for what she was about to experience:
