Kota Yamazaki
Kota Yamazaki has been a prominent figure on the Japanese dance scene since the early 1990s, producing some remarkable and highly acclaimed pieces, such as “Cholon,” which looks at the Asian body against the context of urban development. His dance, characterized by clean, precise movements full of sheer dance energy, has brought new impulses to dance in Japan.
He began studying Butoh under Akira Kasai, and later trained in classical ballet under Hirofumi Inoue to deepen his understanding of dance.
In 1989 he was invited to take part in Daniel Larrieu’s work at the CNDC in Angers in France, which was a turning point in his choreographic career. In 1994 he became a finalist at the international choreographic competition at Bagnolet in France with his representative work, “Inflection.” Since founding his first company, Rosy Co. in 1996, he has been keen to explore new ground in his artistic pursuits.
In 2002, he set up the company Kota Yamazaki Fluid Hug Hug Co., for which he has created several notable pieces, such as “Night on the Grass.” Projects including his collaboration with Singaporean Director Ong Keng Sen on “Research: Hamlet” in Denmark have enabled him to continue ...
