Jirí Kylián: Seducing the Audience

It is not the first time that a famous choreographer has tried to overcome the notorious fourth wall of the stage and get in touch with the audience. But nobody has ever taken the audience underneath the stage before. That is just one device with which Jirí Kylián aims to get theatre in from the cold and plant it where it has ultimate relevance – in people’s heads

It is always a delight to speak to Mr. Kylián, a man of great intellectual finesse, possessed of a depth of knowledge that goes far beyond the requirements of his profession. He is a master craftsman driven by a continuously questioning mind that often leads him into the proverbial heart of darkness: that shadowy area where the intellect and the soul are at odds with each other. Alwin Nikolais

I wo!

Tanja Liedtke

Tanja Liedtke, the German-born artistic director designate of Sydney Dance Company, was killed early in the morning of August 17 when she was hit by a garbage truck. She was only 29 years old. Liedtke had recently been appointed to one of Australia’s most important dance jobs – to replace the irreplaceable Graeme Murphy, who had resigned after 30 years as the head...
