Carlos Acosta
Carlos Acosta is one of the greatest dancers in the world. He won the Prix de Lausanne as a complete unknown and has subsequently danced with all the major companies of the world. He is based in London and is a member of the Royal Ballet.
His autobiography is an extraordinary document. It is rare to read a personal story that is so revelatory, particularly from a star at the pinnacle of his fame.
Acosta’s honesty about the emotional, sometimes physical, fights with his father Pedro – the central relationship of his life – are private moments which cast the reader in the role of unwilling voyeur, such is their intensity.
Likewise the openly expressed lust (and love) he feels for his sexual partners, and the pain these relationships cause him when they fail, are totally candid. His many triumphs on the ballet stage are thus presented along with an unflinching backstage story of emotional pain, injury and homesickness.
This is the best dance autobiography I have ever read: the most truthful and the most moving.

Anu Sistonen was one of the premier dancers of the Finnish National Ballet in the 1980’s and 90’s and her dancing is still exquisite now at her age of 45. On stage, Sistonen still has her articulated strength and musicality. But in her own choreography her movement is much softer and more sensual than it was in the works of others; stripped of all the...
