Inbal Pinto, Avshalom Pollack “Hydra”
Cute with a little absurdity, humorous with a little nostalgia, this production by Inbal Pinto Dance Company of Israel invites the audience to enter into the playful world of imagination. “Hydra”, premiered at the Saitama Arts Theatre in Japan, is a piece of fantastic charm in light colours. In this international collaboration (a co-production with Saitama Arts Foundation, Saitama Arts Theater, Israel Festival and Steps festival Switzerland), the company worked together with two excellent Japanese dancers, Kaiji Moriyama and Shitaro O-ue.
Not their first collaboration, Pinto and Pollack had co-choreographed the exceptionally sensuous dance-theatre piece, “Sogen no Kaze (The Wind in the Plain – a legend of a white horse)” in 2003, in which Kaiji Moriyama danced the role of the horse.
The title, “Hydra,” taken from the nine-headed snake of Greek mythology, is a metaphor for a number of images, including the creature in search of its “backbone,” symbolizing the partner, which could also be interpreted as the origin of man in the Bible.
