Eeva Muilu: “Sold Out”
There are too many acteurs in the field of dance who are obsessed with themselves. Their attempts to gain the spectator’s attention can be pitiful. They represent a genre not entirely sincere in its endeavours to create new art.
Luckily, there are those who have the ability to enchant ingenuously and unconsciously with the kind of sincerity and naivety without which a “classic” rarely comes about. Two of them are young Finnish choreographers and dancers, Jyrki Karttunen and Eeva Muilu. Five years ago Karttunen created a naturally classic solo: “Keiju” (The Fairy).
The piece flirted not only with classical ballet but also with amateur art forms such as the questionable pleasures of the “fairy plays” of school celebrations.
Eeva Muilu, ten years Karttunen’s junior, debuted with her solo piece “Vermiculus” in which she cavorted, laughed and wept, wearing only lingerie. Muilu has the ability to appear in front of an audience in such a state of candour and vulnerability the viewer takes part in her joy and sorrow. This also applies to her latest piece, “Sold out.”
