A body that thinks is a body that dances: João Fiadeiro, choreographer and committed champion of dance in Portugal, looks for answers to the question of what can legitimately be presented on a contemporary stage

To complain about the communication problem between the audience and contemporary dance is to state a platitude that is by now merely rhetorical. For Portuguese choreographer João Fiadeiro, for one, this is no matter for concern. “In a contemporary performance we are not going to confirm expectations but be confronted with something. We are in a territory of questioning, not entertaining,” he says unequivocally.

Tot...

Déjà Donné: «My Name is King»

Erna Ómarsdóttir «The Mysteries of Love»

She is a human volcano from Iceland, proud of her body, voice and skills. She is the kind of strong, truly powerful female personality we need to see more of on the stage. At the Drodesera festival, near Trento, she presented a new piece together with Jóhann Jóhannsson, with whom she previously conceived and performed the signature work “IBM1401, a User’s Manual,”...
