William Forsythe
Following the launch of the new Forsythe Company, William Forsythe seems to be in good creative spirits, liberated from routine and financial burdens. With the 18 selected members of the company, he is as innovative and experimental as ever, showing a slight but significant change in his stance on creation, namely a greater freedom to send clear critical messages to society. “Three Atmospheric Studies,” the company’s inaugural piece, took a different tone from Forsythe’s previous work with its obvious expression of concern about the world today.
Maintaining his artistic standards, Forsythe approached the public with eloquent communicability rather than staying in the realm of metaphysical thought; something I certainly appreciated. “Structurally political,” as Forsythe once described his work, his message was interestingly built into the artistic structure of the dance.
Another experiment with the public was carried out in the touching performance installation created in collaboration with Thom Willems, “You Made me a Monster.” This piece invited the audience to participate in the artwork, giving rise to an interactive relationship between the performers and the viewers.
