Nigel Charnock
Nigel Charnock’s three year contract with the Helsinki City Theater Dance Company is over and another man has stepped in to lead the group of ten top dancers. The new director, for two years as of January 2006, is one of the dancers: Ville Sormunen. Previously Charnock‘s choreographic assistant and administrative hand, Sormunen already had experience of sitting through the meetings which Charnock avoided in order to have more time for his creative work.
One of Ville Sormunen‘s main jobs is to choose the repertory.
The first piece of his term was a humorous dance piece called “Too Happy People“ by Finnish choreographer Jenni Kivelä, presented in April. His next choice has the complicated name “Apospasmata“ and is by Greek choreographer Andonis Foniadakis, who is based in Lyon, France, with music composed by Julien Tarride.
